St. Joseph Bread
A bread traditionally served on St. Joseph’s Day.
St Joseph’s Bread
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup Warm whole milk (110F)
- 3 tsp Active yeast
- 3 cups Bread flour
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 2 tbsp Melted butter
- 2 large Eggs
- 1/2 tsp Anise Seeds (Fennel seeds as substitute)
Toppings
- 1 Egg white for eggwash
- 1/4 cup Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Bloom the yeast by mixing milk and yeast. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Mix together one cup of flour, sugar and salt on a separate bowl to make flour mixture.
- Add yeast solution and flour mixture on a mixing bowl. Add melted butter and mix for 2 minutes using the standing mixer paddle attachment.
- Add another cup of flour and anise seeds. Mix for another 2 minutes.
- Change to the dough hook attachment and mix in 1/4 cup flour at a time until it forms to a dough consistency. Knead for 4 minutes.
- Transfer the dough into a slightly oiled bowl, cover and set aside until it doubles the size. About 1 hour.
- Slightly punch the dough. You can divide the though and form to various shapes desired. Most popular is a cross, staff, wheat design. Set on a cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicon baking sheet. Let it rise on a warm place for about 40 minutes.
- Set the oven to 350 F. Just before you put in the oven, carefully brush the bread with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds generously. Bake for 35 minutes.
- Transfer to cooling rack, then serve and enjoy.
